India's R&D needs help..

Today one of the greatest problems that the whole nation confronts is of lack of a robust and healthy Research and Development (R&D) environment in the whole nation. Even after more than half a century of independence and being counted among one of the biggest economies and rising nations of the world, still we need to export basic ammunition, choppers, fighter jets, submarines, ships and various other things. If we compare India in terms of R&D department with BRICS nations then too we fare pretty miserably spending only 0.87% of our GDP on this crucial industry as compared to Brazil which spend 1.17%, Russia 1.25%, China 1.70% and South Africa 0.93% in the financial year 2009-10.
Though the amount of money being spent in R&D industry has incremented manifold but still we continue to struggle to have a good and confident R&D industry in the nation. Amusingly people can spend Rs. 4000 crores on crackers but when Rs. 450 crores are spent on our space mission, people take a grudge at it saying the money spent could have helped the poor and the needy. Isn’t it disgusting? The sum of Rs. 4000 crores in good because it was spent on petty, low grade and cheap fun but a sum of Rs.450 crore is burden because it was spent to give an impetus to the budding scientists and to plagued Indian space system. What a pity! The thing explains it all.
One of the biggest problems that our R&D industry is facing is clearly of low expenditures by the authority on this vital sector. Our scientists have great plans, wonderful minds and ingenious set up for things, they just need investment in order to arrange for various things need and they can make much better stuff that Russians or Americans (Even American bank of our scientists who constitute 36% of total workforce in NASA). The mangalyaan mission which cost even lesser than a Hollywood film and did its work with utter perfection is a great paradigm which clearly proves that our R&D’s mettle all over the universe. But still, it doesn’t enjoy the amount of confidence and funds that its worth and this is what’s annihilation this humongously worthy industry. This is the reason why we have to approach France, Russia and America for their warfare ammunitions and other materials and those materials which they have themselves stopped using.
Today India stands on a crucial phase in life where we need to make choices, we need to decide priorities and R&D must be our top priority if we want to “Make in India” and to transform our manufacturing sector from mundane to extraordinary.”
