Today on 24th
March, World Tuberculosis Day is being observed throughout the world with the
message Reach, Treat, Cure everyone. The World Tuberculosis Day is celebrated
every year on 24th Day of March to commemorate the day on which
Robert Koch discovered TB Bacillus, the bacteria which causes tuberculosis.
TUBERCULOSIS.
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious
bacterial disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which most commonly
affects the lungs. It is transmitted from person to person via droplets from
the throat and lungs of people with the active respiratory disease.
TB is the second biggest killer next only to HIV/AIDS worldwide. In 2013, 9 million people fell ill with TB and 1.5 million died. In case of India, one person dies every two minutes due to this disease.

Current Scenario of TB in India.
Talking
about India, our nation is seriously afflicted with this deadly disease taking
on its hold around two to three million people and stands among the biggest
health problems being faced by the countrymen. According to World Health
Organisation (WHO) the incidence of tuberculosis cases in India is 2.2 million
out of the total incidence of 8.7 million cases worldwide. Tuberculosis is one
of the biggest health disasters in India and the drug resistant tuberculosis hunts
down thousands of people every year.
According to
WHO, India has world’s largest tuberculosis epidemic. Around the whole nation
tuberculosis slays down thousands of people because of lack of awareness as
well as the treatment among the people. Even in some rural areas, this ailment
has become a stigma and the person afflicted with the disease is ostracized as
if the patient has committed a crime. As the nation still lacks an effective
program to confront the disease and to spread awareness about the disease, the
nation continues to lose a significant portion of its population every year due
to tuberculosis. According to an estimate of the year 2013, the country lost
5.5 lakh people during the whole year which itself makes this deadly disease
one of the biggest concern of our health care sector in which current 15 lakh
people are officially registered as the prey of tuberculosis.

TB can be completely cured if proper and regular medication is taken. What we need to do is to spread awareness among those who know nothing or very less about the disease and to convince them to take proper medication for the problem. Though the government has established many centres for treatment of this disease but still lack of awareness continues to kill lakhs of people every year and now is the high time when we commence taking stiff actions against the problem or we would end up to be in huge disaster.
